Make the Most of Every Opportunity

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5:15-17 NIV

As children of God, we are called to “make the most of every opportunity.” This means that we can be intentional in showing the love of Jesus in our everyday lives. All we have to do is offer ourselves as a willing and available vessel for the Holy Spirit to work through. There are so many opportunities that we have on a daily basis to share the gospel through our words and actions that will impact eternity.

Here are some ways that you can be intentional about making the most of every opportunity to do good to others:

  1. Hold the door for someone.
  2. Call out the beauty and gifts in others and let them know how much you appreciate them.
  3. Let someone else go ahead of you in line.
  4. Give someone a gift. This can be time, money, food, a hug, anything that you know will bless them.
  5. Make a conscious effort to look for people that are excluded and left out. Go over and have a conversation with them.

As you go through your day to day life, remember to be present in the moment and keep your eyes open. Always be on the lookout for ways you can bless those around you. It’s the little things that mean the most. You can share the love of God by something as simple as saying good morning to someone. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can meet the needs of others so that He can minister to them through you. He may even give you specific words to say to someone that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. You have the power to light up this dark world with God’s glory and love, and all you have to do is be available and obedient to His leading.

There is a song that captures the idea of making the most of every opportunity. It’s called “Dream Small” by Josh Wilson. Here’s a link if you’d like to check it out:
