10 Verses To Speak Over Yourself

It’s so important that we know who we are in the midst of a foggy and chaotic culture that continuously throws out different ideas about our identity based on what feels right in the moment. We are instructed to speak and meditate on God’s word day and night (Joshua 1:8) so that we may be prosperous and successful.

We need to know the truth and have it planted deep in our hearts so that we are not swayed by opinions and the ever-changing trends of culture. 

I try to make a habit of speaking God’s word over myself every morning while I’m getting ready.

Why I Started Speaking God’s Word Over Myself

For years, I felt defined and confined by my visual impairment. I was so consumed with my insecurities that it seemed as though vision loss had eclipsed every other part of my identity. Instead of seeing myself first as a daughter of God, I often saw myself through the lens of what I could not do, what made me different and how other people might perceive me.

Then one day, I was walking with my cane and feeling especially insecure when the Holy Spirit quietly whispered to my heart, “But you’re My daughter.”

Those words gave me a new perspective. My visual impairment had not disappeared, but I began to understand that it did not have the authority to define me. Before I am a woman with a disability, I am God’s daughter. I am chosen, loved and created for His purposes.

I started writing Bible verses in Braille and speaking them over myself. I needed God’s truth somewhere I could return to when insecurity became loud. As my fingers moved across those words, I was reminded that my identity was not found in my eyesight, my limitations or the opinions of other people. My identity was found in Christ.

Over time, speaking God’s Word changed the way I saw myself and the way I saw my life. I began to understand that my story could encourage someone else. The very thing that once made me feel confined could become an opportunity to be a blessing in God’s Kingdom. God could use my voice, my experiences and even the places where I felt weak.

That truth gave me a new confidence. It was not confidence in my own ability or a denial of the difficult parts of living with vision loss. It was confidence in who God says I am and in what He can do through a surrendered life.

Maybe there is something in your life that has tried to eclipse your identity too. A disability. A failure. An insecurity. A label someone placed on you. Those things may be part of your story, but they do not have the final word over who you are.

God does.

The verses below are truths I return to when I need to remember who I am. Read them slowly. Write them in a form you can return to, whether that is print, Braille, an audio recording or a note on your phone. Speak them aloud and let God’s Word become louder than every false label.

Esther 4:14

I was made for such a time as this.

Proverbs 31:25

I am clothed with strength and dignity and I can laugh at the days to come.

Psalm 139:14

I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

2 Timothy 1:7

The Spirit God gave me does not make me timid, but gives me power, love and a sound mind.

Nehemiah 8:10

The joy of the Lord is my strength.

3 John 1:2

I will be in good health even as my soul prospers. 

2 Corinthians 5:21

I am the righteousness of God in Christ.

Ephesians 2:10

I was created in Christ Jesus to do good works that God prepared in advance for me to do.

1 Corinthians 6:19

I am the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Colossians 3:12

I am chosen, holy and dearly loved.
