Get Dressed

Clothes do not automatically appear on our bodies. We choose what we put on.

The same is true for our character.

Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

As children of God, we are called to reflect the character of Christ and “clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Clothe with the character of Christ

  • Compassion

  • Kindness

  • Humility

  • Gentleness

  • Patience

Reflecting Christ’s character requires action

This is a lifestyle we must continually make the choice to practice on a daily basis. This is not always easy, but when we desire to do the will of God, He will always give us the power to obey Him.

We are able to put these clothes on and reflect the character of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. He gives us the grace to live as Jesus does.

When I meditate on these verses, I realize that there is another side to wearing these clothes.

Show the love of Christ to others including myself

Oftentimes, I am very hard on myself and I do not show myself any compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, mercy or love. I can forgive others more quickly than I can forgive myself.

I have learned that these clothes are just as much for me to enjoy as they are for others. For example, when I wear an outfit I wear it because I myself like it even if it receives no compliments.

We must put on the clothes of Christ for others as well as ourselves.
