It’s Okay To Be Dependent
Pressure To Be Independent
I struggle with feeling pressure to be independent.
The feeling of not being where I should be is sometimes very overwhelming. For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with comparing myself to people that have full sight. I feel like I am so far behind, that I am not enough and that there is always an endless list of skills I need to hurry up and master. But in the middle of it all, God is showing me that it is okay to be dependent.
I'm learning that dependence upon Him is the key to my independence.
The more I rely on Him for help, the more confident I am.
God made us for Himself; we were created for our Creator. Our purpose is to be in a relationship with Him.
We see this throughout Scripture, beginning in the Garden of Eden, to the Garden of Gethsemane and finally one day in the New Eden.
The purpose of the cross is to reconcile us back to God so that we may enjoy everlasting intimacy with Him.
Joshua 1:5
Dependence on The Holy Spirit
It’s so important that we learn to cultivate a conscious awareness of God’s presence. Even when we cannot feel Him or hear Him, He is always right there with us in every moment. Developing greater dependence upon the Holy Spirit is essential.
Even Jesus depended upon the Holy Spirit, so how much more should we!
Jesus was continually surrendering to the Spirit’s will and allowing Himself to be led and guided by Him. He did not speak on His own, but He spoke only what He heard.
As followers of Jesus, we are commanded to not quench the Spirit and to be submissive to His promptings.
God wants us to trust and rely on Him for everything. He knows what we need before we ask Him, but He still wants us to ask Him by faith so that we may have our needs met.
Ephesians 2:22
It has been such an exciting journey of learning to become increasingly more dependent upon the Holy Spirit.
We are partners together, and I follow His lead.
I always ask Him to help me and I pray that we may partner together to accomplish His will. He gives me confidence, and I can feel His joy overflowing in my heart as we work together to deliver the word of the Lord.
He is the reason I am so bold and confident; my strength is found in Him, and apart from Him I can do nothing.
Another notable example of my partnership with God occurred on a geometry test. The test covered a concept I could not seem to grasp. I asked my teacher for help and studied my notes over and over again, but I still did not get it. The night before the test, I prayed that God would give me the grace to understand the material, and sure enough, He did. I got a 103% on that test (there were extra credit questions) by the grace of God. How wonderful it is that we have a God who cares about every intricate detail of our lives!
In whatever you do, practice dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
Even as I write this article, I am praying that He would guide my words and direct the content where He wants it to go.
The more I depend on the Spirit, the more I live out who I was created to be.
