God revealed Himself through many names in the Old Testament. His names show us His character and who He wants to be for us. We have the opportunity to not only know His names, but experience them in our lives.

Here are some of His names and the events in which they were revealed.

The Lord My Provider

Jehovah Jireh: “The Lord Will Provide”

Genesis 22

God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. Just as Abraham was about to kill him, the angel of the Lord told him to stop. Suddenly Abraham saw a ram which he decided to sacrifice on the alter instead of his son Isaac. For this reason, he called that place, “The Lord will Provide”.

The Lord My Healer

Jehovah Rapha: “The Lord That Heals”

Exodus 15

When the Israelites came to Marah, the water was bitter and unfit to drink. The Israelites were angry with Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?” Then God showed Moses a piece of wood, and when Moses threw the wood into the water, it was now fit to drink. God then told the Israelites that if they obeyed His commands, he would not bring upon them the diseases He brought upon the Egyptians, for He is “The Lord who heals you”.

The Lord My Peace

Jehovah Shalom: “The Lord Is Peace”

Judges 6

Gideon was called by God to defeat Israel’s enemy, the Midianites who oppressed them. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and told him to save Israel from the hand of the Midianites, and Gideon replied with many excuses as to why he could not do this. Eventually, Gideon realized it was the angel of the Lord and as a result he became very afraid. But the Lord replied by saying, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.” After this, Gideon built an alter to the Lord and called it “The Lord Is Peace”.

There are many more names of God: The Lord My Banner, The Lord Our Righteousness, The Lord of Hosts, just to name a few.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

What He did before, He will do again. How have you seen His names in your life? Who has He been to you?
