Sinners or Saints?

sunset behind three crosses

There is a popular phrase that a lot of Christians say,

I’m just a sinner saved by grace
— unknown

This idea severely diminishes what grace is.

Who we are in the Lord

It’s all about having the right perspective, and this requires a paradigm shift in who we think we are in the Lord.

In Romans 5:8, Paul says:

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

We Were Sinners

The identity of being a sinner is past tense as indicated by the word “were”.

Another interesting point to note is that Paul opens his letters to the churches with a similar greeting:

Romans 1:7

To all who are in Rome…called to be saints.

Ephesians 1:1

…to the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:1

…to all the saints who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.

Colossians 1:2

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse…

Notice that Paul through the Holy Spirit consistently addresses the believers as “saints”.

There must be a shift in our thinking, so that we can grasp the fullness of what Christ’s blood accomplished for us.

We Are Saints

I will close with a verse that speaks of the power of grace.

Romans 6:14

For sin shall not have dominion over you, for You are not under law but under grace.
