What Does God Desire From Us?
It’s easy to only run to God when everything around us is falling apart. Desperation and brokenness can drive us to seek His help, healing and freedom.
The Honest Pursuit of God’s Gifts
We often desire something from God, whether it's a breakthrough, healing, a promotion at work or simply to feel His presence after a period of spiritual dryness. There's nothing wrong with approaching God for our needs and asking Him to move on our behalf according to His will. Jesus himself encourages us to ask:
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. - Matthew 7:7
Fulfilling God’s Greatest Commandment
Just as we have our desires, God has desires from us as well. The core of what He seeks from us is expressed in the first and greatest commandment:
…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. - Matthew 22:37-38
The gospel is all about God through Christ providing a way for us to be cleansed from sin. This was done so we can be in restored fellowship with God, because He is seeking our love.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Jesus highlights the importance of worship when He speaks to the woman at the well:
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. - John 4:23
How amazing is that! God is looking for us as we worship Him.
It's clear that God does not just desire our prayers or biblical knowledge, but our heartfelt worship expressed joyfully:
Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. - Psalm 100:2
Mercy Over Sacrifice: Knowing God Personally
God emphasizes the importance of mercy and personal knowledge of Him over ritualistic offerings:
For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. - Hosea 6:6
Throughout the Scriptures, we find what God values—mercy, faith, obedience and humility—all of which are expressions of love.
A Lifelong Commitment to Fulfill God's Desires
Each choice we make reflects our response to God’s invitation to know Him and be saved. Our life on earth represents the sole opportunity to accept this call and live out the desires of God.
Will you fulfill what He desires?
