Jesus: The King of Humility

By Marisa D'Amore · · Updated

Scripture

Zechariah 9:9 (NIV)

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Why Does the King Come Riding on a Donkey?

Zechariah 9:9 foretells that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem humbly on a donkey rather than a warhorse, revealing Jesus as a righteous King whose kingdom is built on peace and humility instead of power.

Reflection

In this prophetic verse from Zechariah, we catch a glimpse of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. The imagery is profound: the King of kings, not arriving on a mighty warhorse as conquerors would, but on a humble donkey, symbolizing peace and humility. This verse echoes the heart of God, revealing His desire for a different kind of kingdom, one built on humility rather than a lust for power. This prophecy was fulfilled and recorded in the book of Matthew when Jesus came into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we rejoice greatly in the revelation of Your Son, our King, Jesus Christ. Thank you for the humility and righteousness that define His character. As we reflect on this passage, help us to embrace the spirit of humility in our lives. May we follow the example of Christ, who came not to be served but to serve.

Action Steps

  1. Practice Humility: Look for opportunities to serve others in humility, putting their needs before yours. Consider how Jesus is the King of kings, yet still associates with the lowly.

  2. Embrace Righteous Living: Strive for righteousness in your actions and decisions, aligning your life with God’s principles.

  3. Share the Good News: Like the people who rejoiced at the arrival of Jesus, share the good news of His love and salvation with others.
