Blessed Are Those Who Mourn
Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, For They Will Be Comforted
Today’s topic from the Beatitudes is found in Matthew 5:4 where Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
We all face sorrow and grief. When we experience incredible pain, whether it’s losing a loved one, watching a marriage crumble or walking through disappointment that doesn’t make sense, it can feel unbearable. But Jesus gave us this wonderful promise.
This Beatitude speaks straight to the heartache so many of us feel. Jesus makes clear that those who mourn are blessed, because God draws near to the brokenhearted and promises everlasting comfort.
Seasons When Grief Feels Overwhelming
I have walked through several seasons of deep mourning in my own life. Times when I wondered how life could ever feel joyful again. Times when simply getting out of bed took tremendous effort. The grief felt suffocating.
But in the months and years after loss, I can testify that Jesus brought comfort through the darkest days. He surrounded me with people who loved me well and reminded me of hope. Slowly light crept back in. Joy found a way to sprout again even amongst the sorrow.
God’s Word and His Spirit ministered comfort to my soul in ways no person could fully do. Little by little, laughter emerged. Coping got easier. I built endurance that’s allowed me to help others going through pain too.
God Understands Our Suffering More Than Anyone
The death and resurrection of Christ make this Beatitude all the more powerful. Because Jesus suffered such agonizing loss and betrayal at the cross, He understands the ache of mourning infinitely more than we ever will. He bore all our griefs and sorrows so that we don’t have to carry them alone.
As Psalms 34:18 says “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Our Savior experienced crushing loss beyond what any human could endure. He chose to be crushed, absorbing all the agony of a sinful world so those who trust in Him will never face eternal sorrow. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, our mourning is only temporary. Eternal rejoicing lies ahead!
In this life, you and I will mourn over injustice, lost dreams, broken relationships and more. We live in the “already but not yet” tension awaiting the return of Jesus to make all things new. But the day is coming soon when He will wipe every tear from our eyes (Rev 21:4) and all that remains will be joy everlasting with Christ. As we seek Him today in our grief, He faithfully carries us until that glorious day.
Take Comfort Today If You Are Hurting
We can rest in the promise of our Savior that comfort is near. Allow Jesus to meet you in the darkest valley and remind you that the light of His love penetrates even the greatest sorrow. He will get you through challenges when you lean fully into Him.
Truly, the mourners are blessed because they experience God’s comfort in a profound way. May His Word and Presence lift you up today!
