25 Bible Verses About Courage and Bravery

In Scripture, courage usually arrives as an instruction. It is given to someone who is already afraid, and it comes attached to a reason that has nothing to do with their own capability.

God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous, and then says why: because I am with you wherever you go. The command comes with its own fuel.

Temperament has little to do with it. Some of the bravest people in these pages were reluctant, young, outnumbered, or standing in a room where saying the wrong thing could end them.

1. Deuteronomy 31:6 — Courage Comes With a Reason

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them, for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

Moses is speaking to a nation about to cross into land held by people stronger than they are. The command comes first, then the reason, and the reason is who goes with them. The size of the enemy never comes up.

2. Joshua 1:9 — The Question Before the Command

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

God opens with a question, and it is almost impatient. Haven’t I already told you this? Joshua has just taken over from Moses, a job that would send anyone back to the instructions looking for an exit. The last three words carry the weight: wherever you go. That includes the assignment you would never have picked.

3. 1 Chronicles 28:20 — A Father Hands Over an Impossible Project

David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do it. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you, until all the work for the service of the LORD’s house is finished.

“Be strong and courageous, and do it.” The courage here has a job attached. Solomon is being handed the temple, a project his father wanted and was forbidden to build, and the encouragement runs all the way to the finish. Bravery that fades after the groundbreaking leaves a foundation with nothing on it.

4. 2 Chronicles 32:7 — Count Again

“Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or dismayed because of the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater one with us than with him.

Hezekiah concedes the size of the Assyrian army and then reframes the arithmetic: there is a greater one with us than with him. Fear is good at counting what is against you and terrible at counting what is with you. Hezekiah answers it with a fuller count.

5. Esther 4:14 — For Such a Time as This

For if you remain silent now, then relief and deliverance will come to the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Who knows if you haven’t come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Mordecai gives Esther no guarantee of safety, and that is what makes this honest. He tells her God’s people will be delivered with or without her, and then asks whether her whole position exists for this moment. Approaching the king uninvited could have killed her. She went anyway, and the famous line she speaks four verses later is “if I perish, I perish.”

6. Psalm 27:3 — Confident With an Army in View

Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

The army is real, and it stays. An army that encamps has settled in to wait, and the psalm voices its confidence with that camp still in view. Even then, the second line says. Before any battle starts and before anything is won, the writer has already decided on confidence. The reason sits in the psalm’s opening verse, where God is called the light and strength of the writer’s life. If something hard has moved in for the long haul, a diagnosis or a debt that will take years to clear, confidence can begin while it is still camped outside your door.

7. Psalm 27:14 — Courage That Looks Like Waiting

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

Waiting rarely feels brave. It feels like nothing is happening. Yet “be strong” sits between two instructions to wait, as though the strength is needed for the waiting itself. If you are in a season with no visible movement, the instruction is to hold.

8. Psalm 31:24 — Addressed to Everyone Hoping

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD.

The address lands at the end of the line, and it is wide: all you who hope in the LORD. Hope is the only qualification listed. You can have it on a day when you feel nothing else.

9. Psalm 56:3 — What to Do While Still Afraid

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

Not “if.” When. David wrote this after being seized by the Philistines in Gath, and the sentence expects fear to arrive on schedule. Trust is something you do while the fear is still in the room. Your hands can be shaking while you put your weight on God.

10. Psalm 112:7 — Steady Before the News Comes

He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

Picture a person before the phone rings. Steadiness like that is built in ordinary weeks, by trusting God in small and unremarkable things, so the habit is already in place when the bad news lands. It cannot be installed in the moment you need it.

11. Proverbs 28:1 — Bold as a Lion

The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

Two pictures, side by side. One person runs when no one is chasing, a guilty conscience inventing footsteps behind them. The other has nothing to hide and moves through the world accordingly. Boldness here grows out of a clear conscience, and anyone made right with God can have one.

12. Isaiah 41:10 — Strengthen, Help, Uphold

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Each promise in the list moves closer. First God strengthens you, then he helps you, and by the third he is holding you up with his right hand. It is the grip of someone steadying a friend whose knees have given out, a hand under the arm, taking part of the weight.

13. Isaiah 43:2 — Through, Not Around

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

Through the waters. Through the fire. The flood still comes and the fire still burns. What God promises is company inside it and a limit on what it can do to you. If you have waited for a hard season to lift and watched it continue, that limit may be the promise you can actually stand on.

14. Jeremiah 1:8 — Too Young, Still Sent

Don’t be afraid because of them, for I am with you to rescue you,” says the LORD.

Jeremiah’s first response to his calling was that he was too young and did not know how to speak. God answers with his presence and sends him anyway.

15. Daniel 3:17-18 — But If Not

If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”

Three men stand in front of a king who has just described exactly how they will die. They say God is able to save them. Then they say the bravest three words in the account: but if not. Their obedience holds whether the rescue comes or not. Courage and optimism part ways right there. Keep that sentence for the day you are asked to do the right thing with no guarantee of how it ends.

16. Haggai 2:4 — Be Strong and Work

Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the LORD. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the LORD, ‘and work, for I am with you,’ says the LORD of Armies.

Be strong, and work. The people rebuilding the temple had just heard older members of the community weep over how small this one looked compared to the first. Courage gets pointed at an unglamorous job nobody was calling impressive. Most of us need it in exactly that kind of place.

17. Matthew 14:27 — Cheer Up, in a Storm

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

The disciples have been fighting a headwind well into the night when a figure comes toward them across the water, and they cry out that it is a ghost. Jesus answers immediately. He tells them to cheer up, tells them who he is, and only then tells them not to be afraid. Fear tends to settle once it knows who is coming. When something frightening is moving toward you in the dark, start by asking who else is out on the water.

18. John 16:33 — Trouble Promised, Courage Commanded

I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus says this on the last night before the crucifixion, to men who will scatter within hours. He predicts trouble plainly and puts the courage on the other side of a victory already won. Peace is located in him. Trouble is located in the world. Both are described as facts.

19. Acts 4:13 — Ordinary Men, Unmistakable Boldness

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled. They recognized that they had been with Jesus.

The council is confused: the boldness is out of all proportion to the résumé. Peter and John have no formal training, and this is the same Peter who denied Jesus to a servant girl in a courtyard. The explanation the council lands on is the right one: they had been with Jesus. Time spent with him is the only credential mentioned.

20. 1 Corinthians 16:13 — Four Short Orders

Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!

Four commands, no explanation attached, like instructions called out quickly to someone who already knows the situation.

21. Ephesians 6:10 — Strong in Someone Else’s Strength

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

The strength is borrowed, and the verse says so twice. In the Lord. In the strength of his might. Everything that follows in Ephesians 6 is armor God supplies. If your own resolve ran out this week, you are still standing in armor you never had to make.

22. 2 Timothy 1:7 — What God Did Not Give

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

Paul is writing from prison to a younger man who appears to be losing his nerve. The sentence opens by ruling fear out as a gift from God, so when fear speaks with authority in your life, you can stop treating it as his voice. Then comes what God did give, and self-control sits right beside power. Courage in Paul’s version keeps its head.

23. Hebrews 4:16 — Boldness at the Throne

Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.

Here boldness goes into prayer. That may be where you need it most. Approaching God is described with the same confidence you would need to walk into a throne room, and the reason given in the preceding verses is that the one on the throne has been tempted in every way you have. Come for mercy, the verse says, and come in time of need, with nothing sorted out yet.

24. Hebrews 13:6 — Say It Out Loud

So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

Courage is spoken here. The writer quotes Psalm 118 and frames it as something believers say out loud. Try it on a morning when you feel none of it. When feelings get loud, truth has to get louder, and hearing it in your own voice reaches places silent reading misses.

25. 1 John 4:18 — Love Is What Drives Fear Out

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

Love is what casts fear out here, and willpower never enters the verse. The love in question is God’s love for you. Fear expects punishment, and someone convinced punishment is coming cannot be brave. Settle what God thinks of you and a great deal of fear loses its subject matter.

Courage in Scripture Comes to the Afraid

Put those verses side by side and almost every command to be strong goes to someone afraid. Almost every one comes attached to a promise about God’s presence. Promises about the outcome are much harder to find.

Joshua was afraid. Jeremiah thought he was too young. Esther knew the law and went anyway. Peter had already failed publicly before the council marveled at his nerve. The Bible describes none of them as fearless, and fearlessness never shows up as the goal.

If courage required the feeling to go first, most of us would be disqualified before we started. Scripture describes obedience carried out while afraid, and you can do that today with your hands still shaking.

The three men in Daniel 3 remain the clearest picture of it. They believed God could rescue them. They never claimed to know that he would. They made their decision before knowing, and a real decision always gets made there.

When You Have to Be Brave Tomorrow

Sometimes courage is a conversation you have been avoiding, a diagnosis appointment, a boundary you have to hold, or telling the truth about something you would rather keep quiet.

A few things help.

Name the actual fear. General dread is much larger when it stays vague, so write down the specific thing you are afraid will happen. You will often find it is one sentence long and answerable from Scripture.

Take the promise, not the outcome. Isaiah 43:2 says you will pass through the water. Ask God for company inside the hard thing as well as for its removal, and you will be praying for what he actually promised.

Decide before the moment. Daniel’s friends had their answer ready before the furnace was heated. Settle now what you will do, so the decision is already made when the pressure arrives.

Speak it aloud. Hebrews 13:6 frames courage as something believers say. Read the verse out loud on the morning it applies.

A Prayer for Courage

Father, You know what I am avoiding and why. You know the conversation I keep postponing and the thing I am afraid will happen if I obey You. Thank You that every time You told someone to be strong and courageous, You gave them a reason, and the reason was Yourself. Be with me wherever I go, including the place I do not want to walk into. Strengthen me, help me, uphold me with Your right hand. Where I have been waiting for the fear to lift before I move, give me the courage to move while it is still here. And if the outcome is not the one I am asking for, let me be someone who says but if not and obeys You anyway. In Jesus’ name, amen.
