25 Bible Verses About God's Will and Direction

By Marisa D'Amore ·

Title card reading 25 Bible Verses About God's Will and Direction over an open brass compass and a closed Bible on a wooden table.

The offer expires Friday. The other one is also good. You have asked God for a sign, and the room is still quiet.

Some of His will is already in plain sentences. Rejoice. Pray. Give thanks. That daily will has its own page in 10 Bible verses about God’s will. The verses below stay with the other question: which road do you take when both roads look open?

Read one slowly. If the real ache is that the story still will not add up, trusting God when you don’t understand sits closer to that.

Bible Verses About God’s Will and Direction

1. Psalm 25:4-5 — Show Me Your Ways

Show me your ways, LORD. Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. I wait for you all day long.

The prayer asks to be shown, taught, and guided, and the waiting lasts all day. You can pray it on the walk to the car.

2. James 1:5 — Ask, and He Gives

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

This verse says that if you lack wisdom, you ask God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach. Name the two options, submit it to God, sleep on it.

3. Psalm 119:105 — A Lamp for Feet

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

The lamp is for your feet, the next few steps you can actually take. Open a passage you already trust and let it light the email you send today and the conversation you have tonight.

4. Proverbs 3:5-6 — Acknowledge Him in the Actual Ways

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Acknowledge Him in the lease, the major, the reply you owe. Straight paths are His to make.

5. Proverbs 16:9 — The Course, Then the Steps

A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps.

Write the course down. A heart is allowed to plan. The directing of the steps stays with the LORD. Hand Him the page, then take the step that lines up with what He has already said.

6. Isaiah 30:20-21 — This Is the Way

Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers won’t be hidden any more, but your eyes will see your teachers; and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

The voice comes when you turn, to the right or to the left, and it speaks from behind you. You may still be eating the bread of adversity when your teachers stop being hidden. Walk in the way you hear.

7. Jeremiah 10:23 — Direct My Steps

LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

Pray Jeremiah’s words back before you choose. Then ask the LORD to direct the step in front of you.

8. Proverbs 15:22 — Counselors Are Needed

Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.

Ask one person who loves God and will tell you the truth, then another. Send the text you have been composing in your head.

9. Proverbs 14:12 — The End of the Road

There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Seeming right can wear a calm face. Look at the end of the option. If it asks you to lie, hide, or leave what God has already commanded, the end of that road is already described.

10. Psalm 143:8 — Morning, Then the Way

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

Loving kindness comes first, in the morning, and then the way you should walk. Lift up your soul before the inbox, and ask Him to cause you to know the way for this one day.

11. Exodus 33:14 — Presence, and Rest

He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Moses asked to be shown the way. The answer he received was presence, and rest. Carry that into the meeting.

12. Romans 12:2 — A Renewed Mind

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Set the option beside Scripture. A renewed mind is how you prove what is good, well-pleasing, and perfect.

13. John 7:17 — If Anyone Desires to Do His Will

If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or if I am speaking from myself.

During the feast, Jesus went into the temple and taught. The people marveled that He knew the Scriptures, since He had never been educated in their schools. He said the teaching belonged to the Father who sent Him. Anyone who desires to do God’s will can tell whether that teaching is from God, or whether Jesus is speaking from Himself. That desire is how a person recognizes His authority.

14. Matthew 6:33 — Seek First

But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Seek God’s Kingdom and His righteousness first, and the job, the city, and the relationship sit among “all these things.” Ask what it would look like to seek Him inside this choice.

15. Luke 22:42 — In the Garden

saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

He speaks the cup honestly, then gives the Father the last line. You can tell the Father what you want and still end the prayer with His will.

16. Philippians 2:13 — He Works the Willing

For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

The willing itself is His work in you. Ask Him to work in you the will that pleases Him, and the strength to do the thing once you see it.

17. Micah 6:8 — Already Shown

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

What He requires while you wait is already plain: act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. Do that in the ordinary hours of this week, and let it tutor the larger choice.

18. Psalm 37:23-24 — Established, and Held Up

A man’s steps are established by the LORD. He delights in his way. Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for the LORD holds him up with his hand.

The LORD establishes a man’s steps and delights in his way, and when he stumbles the LORD holds him up with His hand. If you choose and then wobble, the holding up belongs to the promise.

19. Isaiah 48:17 — Who Leads You

The LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, says: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.

He calls Himself your Redeemer and the Holy One of Israel, the One who teaches you and leads you by the way you should go. Bring Him the road you have been afraid to put into words.

20. John 16:13 — The Spirit of Truth

However, when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming.

The Spirit of truth guides you into all truth: He hears, then He speaks. Ask Him to guide this decision, and set what you think you heard next to words already written in Scripture.

21. Colossians 1:9-10 — Knowledge, Then a Walk

For this cause, we also, since the day we heard this, don’t cease praying and making requests for you, that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, that you may walk worthily of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,

Paul and Timothy are writing to the saints in Colossae. Epaphras, their fellow servant, had told them about that church’s faith in Christ Jesus and the love they had for all the saints. “For this cause” and “since the day we heard this” point back to that news. From then on, Paul and Timothy keep praying that these believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will, in spiritual wisdom and understanding, so they would walk in a way worthy of the Lord, please Him, bear fruit in every good work, and keep growing in the knowledge of God.

22. Ephesians 5:17 — Understand His Will

Therefore, don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Give the decision an hour with an open Bible. Understanding the will of the Lord is the assignment in the sentence.

23. Proverbs 19:21 — Many Plans

There are many plans in a man’s heart, but the LORD’s counsel will prevail.

A crowded mind really does hold many plans, and the LORD’s counsel is what prevails. Lay the list in front of Him and ask which counsel is His.

24. Psalm 23:2-3 — Rest, Then the Path

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

He makes you lie down, leads you beside still water, and restores your soul before He guides you in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Sleep before you sign something you would regret at midnight.

25. Acts 16:6-10 — A Region Closed, a Call Open

When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them. Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him and saying, “Come over into Macedonia and help us.” When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them.

The Spirit forbade Asia and would not allow Bithynia, and then in Troas a man from Macedonia said come, so they went. When a no is clear, look for the place where He is already saying come, and go there.

When the Choice Is Still Open

Pray Psalm 25:4-5 before you open the spreadsheet.

Ask for wisdom out loud, the way James 1:5 says, and name the actual options.

Text one wise counselor. Proverbs 15:22 puts plans in company.

Do the good you can already see: justice, mercy, a humble walk, from Micah 6:8, while the larger door stays open.

Sleep. Psalm 23 puts rest beside guidance.

A Prayer for Direction

Father, show the person reading this Your ways. Teach them the path. Jesus, they want Your will, and they can say so even while they still want a particular outcome. Holy Spirit, guide them into truth, and give wisdom without reproach. Lead them in the step they can take today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know God’s will for a decision?

Start with what He has already shown: act justly, love mercy, walk humbly, from Micah 6:8. For the fork in front of you, pray Psalm 25:4-5, ask as James 1:5 says, and set both options beside Scripture.

What if both options still look open?

Do the next faithful thing you can see: the honest conversation, the deadline kept, the night of sleep. Proverbs 16:9 lets you plan the course. The LORD directs the steps. Psalm 119:105 gives light for feet.

What does a closed door mean?

In Acts 16 the Holy Spirit forbade Asia, and the Spirit would not allow Bithynia. Then a man from Macedonia said come, and they went. Bring the closed door to God and ask what is still open.

Can I ask God which way to go?

Psalm 25:4-5, Psalm 143:8, and James 1:5 are prayers for that. Ask Him. He gives wisdom without reproach.

What if I choose and then second-guess it?

Psalm 37:23-24 speaks of steps established by the LORD, a stumble, and His hand holding you up. Bring the second-guess back to Him. If Scripture corrects the choice, obey the correction.
