A Deeper Look at Psalm 40

message in a bottle with text "challenges don't define, they refine"

Today let’s take a deeper look at Psalm 40, which is a passage that has actually been on my heart for some years now.

Psalm 40:1

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.

Psalm 40:2

He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

God is the master re-locator. He takes us from the pit to the rock. He lifts us out of the slime of our shame. He lifts us out of the mud of our insecurity. He lifts us out of the filth of our sin. He takes us as we are, but He loves us too much to leave us there. He sets our feet on the solid rock of Jesus.

Psalm 40:3a

“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.”

He interrupts our song of despair with a song of hope. He interrupts our song of anxiety with a song of peace. He interrupts our song of mourning with a song of joy.

Psalm 40:3b

“Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”

Through the willingness to share our testimony, many will come and see what God has done. Many will fear the Lord and put their trust in Him.

Psalm 40:9-10

“I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, Lord, as you know. I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.”

I encourage you to be bold in proclaiming the love, faithfulness and saving help of God. Speak of your former pit, for it is the gateway that leads to another’s revelation of the Rock, Jesus Christ.

Other Relatable Verses

Romans 5:8 - Peace and Hope

“He shows us His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God sent His Son into the world to set us free from our sins which separated us from Him. He did not wait to love us until we could get out of the pit and clean things up.

Ephesians 2:1-5 - Made Alive in Christ

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”

Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God interrupted that course of slavery to sin which leads to separation. Instead of the dread of eternal fire, there is fire inside of us, the flaming passion to share the gospel.

It is by grace that we have been saved and it really is AMAZING!
