God is our Reward
It’s truly fascinating to study all the Scriptures which speak of God rewarding us. Here’s a look at how God says we can be rewarded.
The word reward in both the Hebrew and Greek means: wages, salary, pay for service, hire, to give back, consequence, recompense.
Exceeding Great Rewards
The first time the word reward is mentioned in the Bible occurs during God’s conversation with Abraham in Genesis 15:1.
This verse shows us that first and foremost, God is our Reward. This is also the only place in the Bible where God mentions an exceeding great reward.
The Father is our greatest reward.
Great Rewards
The Bible also mentions great rewards.
The word great means: much, large, many, often.
Here are some ways to receive great rewards:
Keeping God’s judgements (Psalm 19:11)
Being persecuted for Jesus’ sake (Matthew 5:11-12; Luke 6:22-23)
Loving your enemies (Luke 6:32, 35)
Doing good to those who do evil to you (Luke 6:33, 35)
Lending freely to all without expecting anything in return (Luke 6:34-35)
Boldness in opposition (Hebrews 10:35)
Rewards
The Bible also often mentions receiving various rewards from God.
Here are some ways to receive rewards:
Giving, praying, and fasting without boasting (Matthew 6:4, 6, 18)
Honoring a righteous person and recognizing them as such (Matthew 10:40)
Giving a drink of water to a disciple of Christ and recognizing them as such (Matthew 10:42)
Serving Jesus (Colossians 3:24)
Enduring trials for Jesus’ sake (Revelation 2:10; James 1:12)
God our Rewarder
In addition to God giving us rewards and being our greatest reward, it is also one of His names.
Hebrews 11:6 says:
In this verse, God is called the rewarder (one who pays wages) of those who diligently seek Him.
God is our Rewarder, just as He is our Healer, Provider, Shepherd, etc.
God is faithful to reward us for our love and service to Him.
