More Than Words: The Transformative Power of God's Word

woman reading Holy Bible

The Bible is more than a historical and religious document.

It has inherent power to transform our lives as we put our faith and trust in it.

Out of the heart, the mouth speaks.

The Bible is God’s heart for us.

God’s Word is the Sword of the Spirit

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

God’s word is one of our primary weapons through which we defeat the enemy. The enemy attacks us with subtle lies that are easy to believe.

It is so important that we spend time daily in God’s word so that we may know the truth and consequently be able to distinguish what is from God versus what is not.

God’s word pushes back the darkness with its light and nothing can stand against it.

Ephesians 6:11-17

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God... Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

God’s Word is our Spiritual Food

Our physical bodies require food for sustenance and life. This is also true with our spirits.

It is much easier to sense hunger in our bodies than it is in our spirits.

Matthew 4:4

…’Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

We must continually feed ourselves with the word of God so that we do not starve our spirits.

John 6:63

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.

God’s word injects life and strength into us, just like real food.

God’s Word is God-Breathed

Last week I experienced a prime example of this. I had not been feeling well for several days. The thought came to me that I should speak out loud in faith God’s promises over myself.

I whispered verses of healing and strength over myself and I believed that God would fulfill His word. I continued on with my day, and a couple hours later, I felt significantly better. I had more energy and over the next few days, my sickness began to subside.

God gives us peace and resources to aid in our healing: physical medicine and the spiritual medicine of His word.

God’s word does not return to Him void.

When we declare and believe it, we will see results.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,  so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Isaiah 55:10-11

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

All Scripture is God-breathed and it holds the power to transform our hearts.

It enables us to see God’s perspective on our circumstances.

We can then declare with faith the things that He speaks over us and watch His promises come to pass.
