What Coffee Can Teach You About Your Calling
Coffee has a very distinct smell.
Its odor usually fills the whole room and there is absolutely no denying that there is a cup of coffee somewhere nearby.
In the same way, as believers, we are called to be like coffee.
We are called to fill the room with the aroma of Christ
Just as people drink coffee to help them wake up, we are called to help others wake up. We are the lights of this dark world and we spread the revelation of Jesus to those around us.
Ephesians 5:14
Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
People also drink coffee because the caffeine in it gives them energy. However, this energy is temporary and usually later leads to a caffeine crash.
But we have energy that will never fade away. The same power that rose Jesus from the grave lives in us who believe.
2 Corinthians 2:14-15
Carrying the Fragrance of Christ
Reflecting Heaven's Values
"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:20).
We belong to another world even while living on earth
Our mindset, choices and lifestyle should align with heaven
We reflect the morals, ethics and priorities of God's kingdom
Part of our role is to carry the sweet fragrance of Jesus into every place we go. When people get a whiff of us, they should catch a scent of divine love, joy, peace and hope.
Spreading the Aroma Through Lifestyle
"But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere" (2 Corinthians 2:14).
Our actions, words and attitudes spread the perfume of Jesus
People notice when we respond differently with patience, kindness and grace
Every interaction is an opportunity to display kingdom characteristics
As we rub shoulders with others at school, work, home and around town, the pleasing smell of Christ will permeate relationships, conversations and encounters.
Cracking Open Our Vessels
We hold this heavenly fragrance in simple clay jars. It is only released when we are cracked open.
"We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us" (2 Corinthians 4:7).
The aroma flows out when we are pressed, tried and broken
Hardships and difficulties provide opportunities for Christ's essence to seep out
Our weakness displays God's strength as we respond in godly ways
So, next time you are drinking a cup of coffee, remember that you are called to spread the aroma of Christ, help others wake up and see the Light and walk in the resurrection power of Jesus.
