Pride is spiritually destructive according to the Bible. It negatively affects our connections with God and others. Let’s explore 20 Bible verses about pride and humility and uncover wisdom for living freely.

1. Proverbs 16:5

“The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.”

God detests pride, vowing to discipline those swollen with self-importance who won’t humble themselves. All flavors of pride spring from ego, self-glorification and “holier than thou” outlooks. This is a warning to walk humbly.

2. 1 John 2:16

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”

John traces all pride back to its earthly source and not God. Pride intertwines with greed, craving status, attention or possessions like idols. This lures us away from eternal treasures. We must continually refocus our desire upon heavenly things to avoid pride’s downward spiral.

3. Proverbs 29:23

“Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.”

Though the world promotes self confidence, Scripture reverses this, pride steadily drags us downward into disgrace while humility lifts our souls and blesses others. We must reject chasing the spotlight to lift up Christ alone.

4. 1 Corinthians 10:12

“So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”

Paul cautions even mature believers against subtly falling for pride and feeling “arrived” spiritually. Yet, unconscious arrogance sets us up for a harsh reality check. Remaining teachable with self awareness helps us retain humble dependence on Jesus’ grace.

5. Proverbs 16:18

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Think of a great rise followed by a great crash. Often before downfall, whether individual or societal, untreated arrogance blinds people, blocking wisdom and change until it’s too late. Therefore, humility helps us endure storms while pride fueled kingdoms inevitably crumble.

6. Philippians 2:3-4

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Paul emphasizes humility breeding unity and considering others as more important, not pushing agendas. Pride fractures community through selfishness and ignoring differing voices. But Christ-like humility generates cooperation, respect and creativity, it changes cultures.

7. James 4:6

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”

James leaves no question that God resists proud hearts. But He pours out grace and empowerment on the humble who recognize their weakness and need for Him. Setting aside false confidence is the posture that unlocks breakthrough.

8. 1 Peter 5:5

“In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”

Within Christ’s family, humility looks like mutual submission, young respectfully learning from elders while leaders joyfully serve. Across generations and roles, listening rather than insisting on being right makes community thrive.

9. Obadiah 1:3

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’”

Through Obadiah, God exposes pride deceiving us to feel independent and invincible, denying shared struggles. However, embracing neediness and interdependence sets us free from isolation and opens doors to support.

10. Proverbs 11:2

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

Scripture warns pride eventually brings shame, whether privately losing connection or publicly falling from power. Alternatively, admitting we don’t know everything allows us to accept correction, multiplying understanding.

11. Psalm 31:18

“Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous.”

The Psalmist links unchecked pride with speaking falsely and exaggerating our virtues or others’ flaws to impress. Honest humility instead appraises one’s strengths and weaknesses accurately, building trust.

12. Romans 12:3

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

Paul advocates self-awareness to avoid pride inflating our egos. Humility acknowledges our gifts as undeserved favor, producing gratitude. This realism also allows healthy reliance on input where we lack skill or wisdom.

13. Proverbs 26:12

“Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.”

Maturity progresses from unconscious weakness toward conscious incompetence. Pride assumes we’ve arrived and humility readily acknowledges how much we have left to learn, making space for correction.

14. Galatians 6:3

“If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.”

Paul dispels subtle pride deceiving us into feeling superior. Practicing self-reflection, accountability and inviting feedback keeps us grounded in reality.

15. Jeremiah 9:23-24

“This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord.”

Though boasting is commonplace in modern culture, Scripture urges we give praise to God alone. As Christ within empowers everything we achieve, humility acknowledges His enabling grace rather than tooting our own horns.

16. Proverbs 27:2

“Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.”

Pride craves others’ admiration, yet chasing praise often backfires. Attempting to impress usually triggers the opposite. As humility rests in God valuing us, not others’ flattery, there is safety and freedom in staying small.

17. Micah 6:8

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

This famous verse encapsulates what it means to walk with God, which includes humility. Genuine compassion and justice flow from humble hearts abandoned to God’s leadership. Pride simply cannot sustain sacrificial service of others over the long haul, only humility empowers this.

18. Zephaniah 2:3

“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger.”

Through Zephaniah comes this solemn plea with humility necessary to be shielded in coming judgment. As Christians we know Jesus bore God’s wrath already. However, pretending we don’t desperately need Christ’s saving grace daily prevents receiving that gift. We have to steward our own soul’s salvation through humility.

19. Colossians 3:12

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Paul celebrates humility as specially chosen saints’ privilege to display. Though the world elevates pride, we get to shine in voluntary humility, reflecting God’s upside down Kingdom values that may confound culture yet heal relationships.

20. Ephesians 4:2

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

Scripture commands humility above all. It is the virtue that enables mutual service and thus intimacy with God Himself. Pride divides and humility reconciles. Kingdom citizenship requires embracing the humble path of wisdom Christ embodied.

Though living humble contradicts human nature, Scripture reveals it is a life-giving road. May we have ears to hear, renouncing arrogance to become more like Jesus!
