The Desire of His Heart - Poem

sunrise view from shore with fence

This poem expresses the desire of the Father’s heart—to once again have fellowship with His children through the blood of Jesus. We journey through the fall of man as recorded in Genesis 3, and see how these events lead us to the gospel. By the blood of Jesus, we now have complete access to the Father and we can draw near to Him with confidence. We can experience the total reconciliation with the Father that Jesus paid such a high price to restore to us.

The desire of my heart

Is to see His intention from the start

Back when the serpent deceived

And Adam and Eve partook from the tree

After they ate the fruit

They realized they were naked

Oh, this reality

They could not take it

So they made coverings to hide

Unable to bear the weight of the shame they felt inside

But still His heart was open wide

He cried, “Where are you?”

Adam replied,

“I was afraid because I was naked

So I decided to hide”

He answered, “Who told you that you were naked?”

“Have you eaten from the tree forbidden by Me?”

Adam, full of shame

Decided to blame

To blame his wife Eve

For the reason he was deceived

He asked her, “What is this you have done?”

Now she decided to run

In shame, she blamed the serpent

For she wished it could all be undone

He is indeed merciful and just

Punishment for sin is a must

But He couldn’t bear to live without us

His heart felt like it would burst

As He knew the results of this sin couldn’t be worse

He covered them with animal skins

Foreshadowing the blood sacrifice for sin

After this, He casted them from His presence

But this just act did not mean He would accept this

He had a plan

To send His Son

The Great I Am

In the likeness of a man

He knew that nails would be driven through His hand

That on His soul our guilt would land

Oh, His glorious grace we cannot understand!

He cried, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do”

Hanging on that cross, He was naked too

Bearing every sin and shame

Now on the spotless Lamb was all the blame

As He breathed His last

There was an earthquake blast

The veil was torn in two

At this all of creation knew

Resurrecting from the dead

He crushed that serpent on his head

For all mankind His blood was shed

In hopes that we would become His newlywed

He gave us dignity for our shame

Healing for our pain

And holiness for our blame

Now we hide in Him

Knowing that all His ways are faithful and true

He is the refuge we run to

Now the curse is reversed

The new covenant is more glorious than the first

In spite of our trespass

We once again have complete access

So let us draw near to God

For this was His desire from the start

That no barrier would ever keep us apart

We are now again held in the warm embrace of the Father’s heart
