Labels - Poem

bright colored labels

We do not have to conform to the labels that seek to limit us. When we find our identity in what God says about us, we can rest in His love as well as live in freedom. His words are the only ones that truly matter. He calls us loved, forgiven and redeemed.

Labels.

They identify, categorize and limit

They seek to quantify what God intricately knitted

They say “you are this”

Or “you are that”

But what if it didn’t have to be like that?

Instead of being branded by wealth or appearance

Position, features or standard adherence

What if we really had a different make up

Church, I think its time to wake up

To shake up

The lies the world made up

You are marked, branded and sealed

By the Spirit who knows the real deal

He took us from rags to riches

He rescued us from our deepest ditches

And provided more than all our imagined wishes

He saw us at our worst

And brought out the best in us

He took us broken and made us whole

When we were empty

He made us full

He has scars on His hands

To show that His grace still stands

Sufficient.

This is why I am insistent

That we do not settle for the limitations of this world

When the world does not know who made it

How can it define who changed it?

We go on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

All of the opinions of others we hold in our hand

But the Word of God is the comments section

The pathway to connection

With the God who breathed out all creation

It is the message of salvation

And the only source of identity revelation

We can go from one thing to the next

Trying to fill a void through seeking to impress

Through putting on a face that isn’t even  ours

Through spending years chasing after stars

But the stars flicker for a moment

And soon burn out

Trends change like the tide

And yet we are unsure

Wondering if there is something more

To you who are far and to you who are near

I want to make one thing clear

You are not accidentally here

Before you were born

God handcrafted your beauty

Designing you to reflect His glory

Was His delighted duty

You are a mystery

A pearl of great price

You are not defined by the comments you read on your mobile device

Labels, yeah, they talk

They say “fit into my little box”

They mock

Stay in here

Go right there

But Jesus took those labels and wrote in grace

On the cross, He put those puny names in their place

And the scars on His hands He will never erase

So, the next time you get called a name

Remind yourself that Jesus came

That all the blame and shame was put on Him

So that you would never be defined by any label again.

You are a son

You are a daughter

A child of the Good, Good Father
